7 Leadership Styles* & How They Impact Your Ministry: #5 MYSTIQUE

If your dominant personality Advantage** is Mystique, your leadership style will be reserved and deliberate. You tend to

Great Listener Great Listener

be seen as a great listener, usually listening more than sharing. You like to do research or get lots of input and consider it well before making any decisions that are major changes. You do not shoot from the hip which means that whether you’re in a meeting or sharing your message, others will feel that your words are well-thought out and thus see them as of high value. You don’t like a lot of drama going on around you. Rather your focus is on results – for yourself and your community. You can communicate well through stories. For other forms of communication you are factual and succinct. You shy away from any claims that you don’t feel you can back up. Because you don’t let your feelings show and are restrained you can do well in meetings and other situations that require negotiations.

As with the other Advantages, when Mystique is your dominant Advantage there are a couple of words of caution that are in order. Because you tend to be so reserved and restrained others can have a hard time knowing what you’re feeling. This can lead to people perceiving you as cold and uncaring if you do not find ways to communicate your care and do so in all appropriate situations. Also, since you don’t like drama, when there’s conflict and others are expressing lots of emotion, your tendency might be to leave the room or avoid the situation all together. If you do stay in such situations, this can cause you lots of stress. Be aware of this and find ways to decompress and de-stress yourself. Also, your desire to do research and get lots of input before making major decisions will be frustrating to those who make decisions quickly, such as those whose primary Advantage is Power. At such times your negotiating skills can be very helpful.

Remember Paul’s words (Romans 12 & 1 Corinthians 12) that we are each a member of the body of Christ. Each part/member of the body has gifts to offer to the whole. No matter what our part is, we are not the whole of the body and cannot go it alone. Whatever your primary Advantage is, those whose dominant Advantage is Mystique have a gift from God. May you use your dominant Advantage in gratitude to God and for the blessing of those you serve. May you also value the gifts that come from those who have Advantages that differ from yours. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Notes: * This material is based on the work of Sally Hogshead from her book, How the World Sees You: Discover Your Highest Value Through the Science of Fascination, ©2014.
